چکیده

A sudden dipolarization followed by long period ( 25 min) magnetic compression-like fluctuations with shorter period waves superimposed on them was observed by the WIND spacecraft in the magnetotail near midnight at 15RE from the earth on Sep 17, 1995. The spacecraft was near the boundary between the northern tail lobe and the plasmasheet. Observations of anticorrelation between the variations of the magnetic field and of the energetic electrons are consistent with the signature of alternating plasma sheet thinning and expanding. Ground data from stations located near the footprints of the magnetic field lines crossed by the spacecraft during the event showed negative bays and Pi2 pulsations occurring near local midnight, which indicate substorm activity. Simultaneous observations from Geotail, which was near local noon at 20RE upstream from the Earth, showed similar fluctuations in IMF Bz . It is suggested that the periodic southward-northward turning of the IMF may have caused the alternating plasma sheet thinning and expanding and the compressional fluctuations, which provide the energy released during the substorm.

Correlation between ground-based observations of substorm signatures and magnetotail dynamics

We present a substorm event study using the four Cluster spacecraft in combination with ground-based instruments, in order to perform simultaneous observations in the ionosphere and magnetotail. We show good correlation between substorm signatures on the ground and in the magnetotail, even though data from the northern-ground and southern-tail hemispheres are compared. During this event ground-...

Magnetotail energy dissipation during an auroral substorm

Violent releases of space plasma energy from the Earth's magnetotail during substorms produce strong electric currents and bright aurora. But what modulates these currents and aurora and controls dissipation of the energy released in the ionosphere? Using data from the THEMIS fleet of satellites and ground-based imagers and magnetometers, we show that plasma energy dissipation is controlled by ...

Report Upon The End Of The GEM Tail-Substorm Campaign

Disturbances of the space environment are a critical aspect of Space Weather and of the NSF Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) program. Other than for the the stormtime ring current, which forms within the inner magnetosphere, the primary space weather disturbances occur within the plasma sheet of the magnetotail and couple along magnetic field lines to the auroral ionosphere. At the time of i...

Substorm-associated large-scale magnetic field changes in the magnetotail: a prerequisite for “magnetotail deflation” events

An attempt is made to search for a critical condition in the lobe magnetic field to initiate large-scale magnetic field changes associated with substorm expansions. Using data from ISEE-1 for 1978, sudden decreases in the lobe magnetic field accompanied by magnetic field dipolarizations are identified. In this study, such events are designated as the magnetotail deflation. The magnetic field co...

Statistical characterization of the growth and spatial scales of the substorm onset arc

We present the first multievent study of the spatial and temporal structuring of the aurora to provide statistical evidence of the near-Earth plasma instability which causes the substorm onset arc. Using data from ground-based auroral imagers, we study repeatable signatures of along-arc auroral beads, which are thought to represent the ionospheric projection of magnetospheric instability in the...
